Owlkeep wants its websites, games, books, media and other productions to be usable and enjoyable by as many people as reasonably possible.
Accessibility is an ongoing part of our design and development process. However, Owlkeep produces many different types of creative and technical content, and accessibility requirements and individual accessibility needs can vary considerably.
For this reason, we do not claim that every Owlkeep website, product or production is completely accessible to every person, device or assistive technology.
We prefer to describe what we are trying to achieve, what features are actually available, and where limitations may exist rather than make an accessibility promise that we cannot reliably guarantee.
1. Our Approach
Where reasonably possible, we consider accessibility when designing, developing and maintaining Owlkeep productions.
Depending on the product, this may include measures such as:
- providing alternative text for meaningful website images;
- using semantic and reasonably structured website content;
- supporting keyboard navigation where practical;
- maintaining readable text sizes and contrast;
- providing alternative or simplified website viewing modes;
- avoiding unnecessary reliance on colour alone;
- providing understandable navigation;
- making interfaces usable across different screen sizes and devices;
- providing volume controls in games and interactive productions;
- allowing music, sound effects or other audio elements to be adjusted separately where supported;
- providing visual or graphical options;
- allowing visual effects to be reduced or disabled where technically practical;
- providing animation, effects or display settings where appropriate;
- avoiding unnecessary flashing or visually disruptive effects where practical;
- supporting subtitles, captions or textual alternatives where available and appropriate;
- providing configurable controls or input options where supported; and
- considering compatibility with assistive technologies during website development.
The accessibility features available vary between individual productions.
The presence of one accessibility feature should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the entire production is accessible for a particular disability, accessibility need or assistive technology.
2. Websites
We aim to make Owlkeep websites reasonably accessible and understandable.
Our website-development practices may include:
- alternative text for meaningful images;
- descriptive link text where practical;
- logical heading structures;
- keyboard-accessible navigation;
- responsive layouts;
- scalable text;
- sufficient visual distinction between interface elements;
- alternative display or viewing modes;
- reduced-motion or similar options where implemented; and
- support for commonly used browsers and assistive technologies.
However, websites evolve continuously.
New content, older content, third-party components, embedded material, technical changes and human error can all result in accessibility problems.
We therefore cannot guarantee that every page, image, interface element or version of an Owlkeep website will always be fully accessible.
3. Alternative Text
We try to provide useful alternative text for images when the image conveys information that is relevant to understanding the page.
Not every image necessarily requires descriptive alternative text.
Decorative images may intentionally have empty or otherwise non-descriptive alternative text so that assistive technologies can ignore them.
Some artistic images, screenshots, historical material, complex illustrations or automatically generated content may have incomplete alternative descriptions.
We may improve or correct these descriptions as content is reviewed.
4. Alternative Viewing Modes
Some Owlkeep websites may provide alternative display modes or controls intended to improve readability or reduce visual complexity.
Depending on the site, these may include features such as:
- changes in contrast;
- simplified presentation;
- reduced visual effects;
- larger or more readable typography;
- reduced animation; or
- other presentation alternatives.
Availability varies between websites and devices.
Alternative modes are intended to improve usability but are not a guarantee of compatibility with every visual impairment, cognitive accessibility need or assistive technology.
5. Games and Interactive Productions
Accessibility in games is particularly dependent on the nature of the game and its mechanics.
Where suitable for a particular game, Owlkeep may provide options such as:
- master volume controls;
- separate music and sound-effect controls;
- visual-effect settings;
- graphical quality controls;
- brightness or display controls;
- reduced visual effects;
- animation or screen-effect adjustments;
- interface or text settings;
- subtitles or other textual information;
- input configuration; and
- other gameplay or presentation options.
Not every feature will be available in every game.
Some game mechanics may inherently depend upon particular combinations of vision, hearing, timing, movement, spatial awareness, reading ability or input methods.
Changing such mechanics can sometimes fundamentally change the intended gameplay or may not be technically practical for a particular production.
We nevertheless aim, where reasonably possible, to provide options that allow more people to experience our games without unnecessarily altering the core experience.
6. Audio
Where Owlkeep productions contain audio, we try to provide reasonable controls appropriate to the production.
Games may, for example, provide controls for:
- overall volume;
- music;
- sound effects;
- dialogue; or
- other audio categories.
The exact controls depend upon the individual production.
Some audio, music or sound effects may form an essential artistic or gameplay component and may not have an equivalent alternative representation.
Where dialogue or other important spoken information is essential to understanding a production, we aim to consider subtitles or textual alternatives where reasonably practical.
7. Visual Effects
Some Owlkeep games and media productions use animation, lighting, particles, camera effects, transitions, screen movement or other visual effects.
Where reasonably practical, we may provide settings allowing some of these effects to be reduced or disabled.
However, we cannot guarantee that every production is suitable for every person who is sensitive to:
- flashing;
- rapid movement;
- screen shake;
- animation;
- visual noise;
- contrast changes; or
- other visual effects.
Where we become aware of a significant accessibility or safety concern associated with a particular production, we may provide an appropriate notice, setting or warning where reasonably possible.
8. Books and Written Works
Owlkeep may publish books and other written works in physical or electronic formats.
Accessibility depends partly on the format and the platform through which the work is distributed.
Where we control the electronic format and it is reasonably practical, we may consider features such as:
- structured text;
- meaningful document navigation;
- selectable text;
- scalable typography;
- compatibility with reading software; and
- descriptions or alternatives for important visual material.
Some works may contain illustrations, unusual typography, page layouts, diagrams or other elements that cannot be represented completely through plain text.
Electronic books distributed through third-party platforms may also depend upon accessibility features provided by the relevant platform, application or reading device.
9. Video, Images and Other Media
Owlkeep productions may include photographs, illustrations, video, animation, audio, trailers and other audiovisual material.
Where practical and appropriate, we may provide alternatives such as captions, subtitles, descriptions or accompanying text.
However, not all existing or historical media has been produced with such alternatives.
Some media also exists primarily as an artistic work rather than as a means of communicating essential information.
We continue to consider accessibility when creating new material, but we cannot guarantee that every existing media item will be retroactively converted into every possible accessible format.
10. Creative and Artistic Content
Owlkeep is an entertainment and creative-production company.
Some accessibility limitations may arise from the artistic or functional nature of a production.
For example, a work may intentionally use:
- particular colours;
- typography;
- visual composition;
- sound;
- animation;
- timing;
- interaction;
- puzzles;
- imagery; or
- other artistic techniques.
Where possible, we try to provide accessibility alternatives without unnecessarily changing the identity or fundamental nature of the work.
An alternative is not always technically, artistically or economically feasible, and an alternative presentation may not reproduce every aspect of the original experience.
Nothing in this section overrides accessibility requirements that are mandatory under applicable law.
11. Third-Party Platforms and Services
Owlkeep productions may be distributed through third-party platforms, stores, publishing systems, video services, social networks or other external services.
Examples can include game-distribution platforms, bookstores, e-book readers, payment systems and externally embedded media.
Accessibility of these systems may partly depend upon the third-party provider and is outside Owlkeep’s direct technical control.
We cannot guarantee the accessibility of independent third-party:
- websites;
- applications;
- storefronts;
- payment interfaces;
- game launchers;
- e-book readers;
- video players;
- social-media services; or
- other external systems.
Where Owlkeep has a reasonable choice between technical implementations, accessibility may be one factor we consider when selecting third-party services.
12. Older and Legacy Content
Owlkeep has produced and may continue to publish material created using different generations of technology, software and web standards.
Older productions may therefore have greater accessibility limitations than newer productions.
Retrofitting older content may sometimes require substantial redevelopment or may no longer be technically possible because the original software, platform, source material or development environment is no longer available.
We may improve older content when reasonably practical, but we do not guarantee that all historical content will be rebuilt to current accessibility standards.
13. Technical Limitations
Accessibility can depend upon factors outside Owlkeep’s control, including:
- operating systems;
- browsers;
- assistive technologies;
- graphics drivers;
- game engines;
- input devices;
- third-party libraries;
- distribution platforms;
- screen readers;
- device settings; and
- combinations of these technologies.
A feature that works with one configuration may not work in exactly the same way with another.
We therefore cannot guarantee compatibility with every assistive technology, browser, operating system, controller, input device or accessibility configuration.
14. Accessibility Is Individual
Different people can have very different accessibility requirements.
A feature that makes a product accessible for one person may not resolve a barrier experienced by another person.
Accessibility can involve, among other things:
- vision;
- hearing;
- mobility and motor control;
- speech;
- cognition;
- reading;
- attention;
- sensory processing;
- colour perception;
- sensitivity to movement or flashing; and
- combinations of different needs.
For this reason, no finite list of features can guarantee universal accessibility.
15. Testing and Conformance
Owlkeep may use technical testing, automated tools, manual review and practical testing when developing accessible features.
However, unless expressly stated for a particular website or production, Owlkeep does not claim that its websites or productions have been independently certified as conforming to a particular accessibility standard or WCAG conformance level.
Automated accessibility tests also cannot identify every accessibility barrier.
Passing an automated test does not mean that a website or production is accessible to every user.
Where a particular Owlkeep service or product is subject to specific mandatory accessibility requirements, we will seek to comply with the requirements applicable to that service or product.
16. Known and Unknown Accessibility Issues
Despite our efforts, accessibility problems may exist that we have not identified.
These may include:
- missing or incomplete alternative text;
- keyboard-navigation problems;
- insufficient contrast in individual elements;
- compatibility problems with screen readers;
- inaccessible third-party components;
- media without captions or descriptions;
- game interfaces that cannot be completely operated using a particular input method;
- effects that cannot currently be individually disabled;
- documents with incomplete accessibility metadata; or
- other barriers that become apparent only under a particular combination of user needs and technology.
The absence of an issue from this page does not mean that the issue does not exist.
17. Reporting an Accessibility Problem
Practical feedback is useful because accessibility problems can be difficult to identify without experiencing the particular combination of content, device and assistive technology involved.
If you encounter an accessibility problem in an Owlkeep website or production, you may contact us through the contact methods provided on the Owlkeep website.
Where possible, please tell us:
- which website, game or production is affected;
- which page, screen or feature caused the problem;
- what you were trying to do;
- the nature of the accessibility barrier;
- your browser, operating system or platform where relevant; and
- the assistive technology or accessibility setting involved, if you are comfortable providing that information.
You are not required to disclose a disability or medical information when reporting an accessibility issue.
A description of the practical problem is normally sufficient.
18. Requests for Alternative Access
If important information on an Owlkeep website is inaccessible to you, you may contact us and describe the information you are trying to access.
Where reasonably possible, we will try to provide the information in another usable form or identify an alternative way of accessing it.
The availability of an alternative format depends upon the content, rights involved, source materials available and technical feasibility.
19. Improvements
Accessibility is not treated as a completed one-time task.
We may improve accessibility as:
- products are updated;
- websites are redesigned;
- accessibility problems are identified;
- technology improves;
- appropriate tools become available;
- user feedback identifies barriers; or
- applicable requirements change.
Priorities may depend upon the severity of the barrier, the number of affected users, technical feasibility, available resources and whether the affected production is still actively maintained.
20. No Absolute Accessibility Guarantee
Our intention to improve accessibility should not be interpreted as a representation that every Owlkeep production is or will become completely accessible.
Except where applicable law requires a particular accessibility result, Owlkeep does not guarantee:
- universal accessibility;
- compatibility with every assistive technology;
- accessibility for every disability or accessibility requirement;
- that every historical production will be modified;
- that every third-party service will be accessible; or
- that accessibility problems will never occur.
Where accessibility requirements are imposed by mandatory law, those requirements take precedence over this section.
21. Applicable Accessibility Requirements
Different accessibility rules can apply depending upon the nature of a product or service, how it is supplied, when it was placed on the market, the role of Owlkeep in providing it and other circumstances.
Owlkeep will apply mandatory accessibility requirements where they apply to a particular product or service.
Nothing in this Accessibility page is intended to exclude, reduce or waive a person’s rights under applicable accessibility, equality, consumer-protection or other mandatory legislation.
22. Changes to This Page
We may update this Accessibility page as:
- our websites change;
- new productions are released;
- accessibility features are introduced;
- known limitations change;
- technology develops; or
- applicable accessibility requirements change.
The current version will be published on the relevant Owlkeep website together with its effective date.
